Preparing the Deck for Winter

Before the first snowfall, it’s important to head outside and check your decking surfaces. Not only do you want to ensure that your deck can withstand the added weight of snow and ice, you should perform maintenance to keep your deck looking its best, season after season.

Inspect the Surface

Damaged, weathered and warped boards can all be signs of an aging deck. If the damage only affects a small area, you may be able to replace the weathered boards to fix the hazard. However, if the boards beneath your feet feel spongy and have too much give, you could be facing a much more serious structural problem. Stay off your deck and contact New Jersey Siding & Windows to see if it’s a result of an underlying structural issue.

Check for Peeling Paint

During the winter season, melting snow can seep into weathered wood decking and cause mold, mildew and rot. As you inspect your deck, look for peeling stain or paint. If the finish is cracked or pulling up, you’ll want to either re-stain or -paint your decking surfaces. Before you get out the paint brushes, smooth out any uneven spots by sanding or scraping, clean your deck thoroughly and make sure to purchase a coating that’s rated for outdoor wood protection. A water-repellent finish will help seal out moisture all winter long.

Examine Joists

A bouncy or vibrating feel underfoot may indicate a problem with your deck joists. Because joists aren’t exposed to light, they can become damaged by excess moisture. Termites may also cause the joists to decay prematurely. If possible, walk or crawl under your deck to examine the joists for damage. If you note mildew or rot, it’s time to call a decking professional.
