Basic Cleaning Guide for Vinyl Siding

Hose Spraying Wall

One of the many benefits of having vinyl siding installed on your house is that it doesn’t require much maintenance. However, grime and mold may build up on the outside of your home, so it’s good to get into the habit of washing the siding a few times a year. If you’re unsure how to tackle this task, then allow New Jersey Siding & Windows, Inc. to provide some helpful tips to keep your house looking spotless.

Getting Ready

Before you start scrubbing, there are a few things you need to take care of in order to protect the rest of your yard from your cleaning supplies. Make sure to clear any obstacles, like furniture or toys, out of the way so you’ll have room to work and your cleaning solution won’t spill on anything. Close all doors and windows tight so no water seeps through, and unplug and cover up any lights or electrical fixtures with plastic sheets and duct tape. Also, make sure to throw a tarp over any plants or other landscaping features nearby that may be harmed by cleaning solution. Once everything is secure, then it’s time to get to work.

Washing Away Dirt

Once you have your cleaning solution and supplies picked out, dip your cloth or brush into the mixture and start lightly scrubbing on the siding to see if it’s effective in washing away dirt and mold. Once you know the solution is working properly, divide up the wall into vertical sections. Work each section one at a time, scrubbing from the bottom of the wall and working your way up to avoid streaking. Make sure not to scrub too hard, as the vinyl siding can crack under excessive pressure. If there is a tough spot that requires more force, apply the cleaning solution and let it sit for several minutes, then start scrubbing. As you go, rinse the section with water once in a while from the top to the bottom to maintain even drying. When each section is completed, move on to the next one.

If you’d like to save effort and time, you may want to use a pressure washer. When pressure washing siding, always keep the nozzle pointed straight ahead. This helps keep water from collecting underneath the siding, where it can lead to mildew or mold. Rinse just as you would when hand washing, and you’ll be done in no time.
